Where Devotion Meets Artistry
The Studio
Anjali Handicrafts was founded by A.M. Raju, a master craftsman whose life's work was the revival and practice of South India's ancient bronze sculptural tradition. Though A.M. Raju is no longer with us, his legacy lives on through every piece in this collection. His wife, Alice Raju, lovingly carries forward his vision — preserving the techniques, the standards, and the devotional spirit that defined his work.
The Tradition
The pieces in this collection draw directly from the Chola bronze tradition, one of the greatest sculptural achievements in human history. Originating in Tamil Nadu between the 9th and 13th centuries CE, this tradition produced some of the world's finest metal sculptures. Proportions follow the classical talamana system; mudras are iconographically precise.
The Process
The technique employed is the ancient cire perdue — lost-wax casting. A model is sculpted in beeswax with every ornament, fold of drapery, and facial expression in precise detail. This wax model is encased in clay, then fired: the wax melts away, leaving a perfect mould. Molten brass or bronze is poured in, and each piece then undergoes extensive hand-finishing to achieve the rich antique surface.
Sacred Collection
27 pieces cast in premium Brass & Bronze with antique finish, each individually hand-finished by the master craftsman.
